DIRECTOR NOTE:
The critical situation in my homeland-Iran-has been the inspiration for my creative work. The short film “SHOGOON” is not an exception. The daily struggle of my people encouraged me to be the voice of the nation. We live in a cynical world loaded with deafening cries. This cacophony of propaganda, led by our government, could set a foolproof example for such a condition. With the penetration of social media in our country, one would imagine the path is now easier. Little do we know that the ‘sedimented noise‘ in our ears has made us more hard of hearing and even more dubious about what to believe. We are left helpless. In the age of information, too, we are left destitute. The main character cannot make sense of her surroundings, being stuck in the elevator. Her life is in danger, yet her calls for help remain unanswered. She desperately tries to resolve the situation. As I was in the process of writing the script, I realized, that most of my narratives happen in closed spaces. As such, my characters are too baffled to understand or accept their status. The elevator and the trapped lady within are the epitomai of such. As I recall the elevator scene, the actress was so worked up trying to get out that for a moment. I couldn’t help but cut in front of the camera and open the door. I asked her to take a deep breath. I synchronized mine with her, and so did the rest of the crew. Then, an awkward silence united us.
